Abuse of Substances What is substance abuse? Substance abuse is the dependence on a legal or illegal drug or medication. Although alcohol and nicotine are legal substances, they are also considered a drug. Substance abuse can be caused by a person’s genetics or from peer pressure and social surroundings. Substance abuse happens all over America. Lots of people use substances and they start spending all of their money on the substance. They lose their jobs, money, friends, and family. They become homeless because they cannot pay their bills and cannot pay for food. Once you get hooked to a substance it is very hard to stop it. If you have been abused you want something to keep it off your mind so people start drinking alcohol but then they become addicted to it. The most commonly used substance was marijuana(Lane). If people in your family have a past history for substance abuse you will have a better chance of misusing drugs(Lane). Abusing these drugs can lead to a substantial effect on families. If your dad is using drugs and you grow up watching it I think that you will start using the drugs because you have watched him do it. Families that argue and fight a lot can lead to substance abuse in teens(Lane). When the families have problems the kids will use substances to get away from their problems.
Smoking marijuana, like tobacco, can have harmful physical effects on the human health. Smoking can affect the lungs causing not only lung cancer, but many other breathing difficulties. “Colorado teens by 2012 were fifty percent more likely to use marijuana than their peers in the rest of the country.” Teens who smoke marijuana may also have lower IQs , memory loss and learning loss. Experts worry that “adolescents are at a particular greater risk” with the legalization of marijuana”.
NBC Nightly news just did a news segment of drivers driving while under the influences of drugs. A study by AAA , has shown that states that have legalized marijuana have seen an increase in fatal accidents involving drivers under the influence of drugs. Colorado, a state that has approved the legalization of marijuana, has seen an increase of DUIs for under the influence of marijuana by 44 percent. The state of Washington has seen an increase of DUIs for under the influence of marijuana by double Colorado’s percentage. (NBC
