Is Google Making Us Stupid? Nicholas Carr makes the statement that “Google is making us stupid”. Mr. Carr has taken his personal encounters from Google and incorporated it into an article about its negative effects on society’s intelligence. Google, defined, is a search engine that finds websites related to what the user enters in the search bar. Once you get to the desired website, Nicholas Carr argues that we glance through the information instead of reading it in its entirety. The days of going to the library, finding a book, reading the information, or reading through a textbook are almost obsolete. He begins writing about personal examples then moves to discussing more scientific and historical examples. After the introduction, Carr writes about his personal experiences. He goes into great detail about his inability to remain focused on long texts. It allows for the reader to understand Carr’s main topic that will be argued during his article. He then continues his writing about relating to others with similar problems affecting them. The transition from personal experiences to relating with others authenticates his argument to be valid. The structure of incorporating personal experiences with others allows for a connection to be made between the two topics. Finally, Carr finishes his article talking about the importance of quiet areas in order to study and have book time. Carr talks about the negative effects about Google consistently throughout his article until the very end. Towards the end he writes about the positive things that quiet areas, textbooks and libraries can do for us. The way the structure plays out through Carr’s entire article was sensational. By doing this, Carr is using a metaphor between the mind and the clock. He talks about the mind thinking like a clock. Therefore, he is comparing them directly to each other. The clock controls the everyday life of many people across the planet. Although, time does not exist it is like a unique form of technology that controls the way we think. An individual’s thought process is much different when running late to work compared to showing up early. The human can feel time moving slowly based on the environment. For example, time seems to go by really fast when you get into a car wreck, compared to sitting in a boring class. Time effects the human minds thinking in a way that is not understandable. It controls it in a manner that we can not do anything about. The world will always use time. Carr uses this creative and accurate analogy to show use logos. He uses his text in a way to persuade his audience that the clock is apart of technology, which controls our life on a daily basis.
