Our workshop on It’s Okay to Be the Boss by Bruce Tulgan, contained four scenarios concerning tardiness at work, overwhelming deadlines, slacking off on the job, and being overloaded with work assignment tasks. One scenario was acted out for each group of two “managers” for a total of four sets of managers. The scenarios allowed the “managers” to touch on any solution presented in the book in order to reach the best resolutions to handle problematic situations with employees. Settings like these were used to demonstrate how learning to solve one small performance problem can diffuse mediocrity and better managing people before they get out of hand in the workplace. “A manager’s job is to identify situations and behavior patterns that may require immediate corrective action and understand what steps should be taken to resolve those” (Sollish & Semanik, 2011). The goals set forth for this workshop was very simple. Participants were placed in groups of four. Each group had to act as managers. The managers were provided with common challenges that managers are faced with. Our job as workshop facilitators was to see how well each group of managers would handle each situation and provide the best strategy. As facilitators, our goals were to monitor and judge each group based on communication, collaboration, attitude, and best answer. Our expectation for this workshop was for participants to be able to apply the concepts and the strategies that have been provided in classroom discussion and in the assigned reading. Everyone gave excellent solutions to the problems. However, we could only reward the group of managers who we felt were the top performers. All participants were awarded candy for their participation, and our top performers were awarded gold stars.
