Isolation defined as the act of being isolated, likens itself to loneliness. Being astray of a group or of a singular body and mind without the presence of others. Isolation can be caused by man vs self and a person isolating themselves. The man vs world conflict is one that also affects ivan. Ivan knows that struggle is pointless inside his prison “however much you pray it doesn’t shorten your stretch. You’ll sit out from beginning to end anyhow.” (163). No matter what he knows that his faith or any one man won't be able to get him out of the prison. He will live out his time like any other person and no miracle will save him from that. He's alone and it's thanks to the soviet government ,Thanks to society, thanks to the world around him. This novel reflects the effect of isolation on lonliness through many means and in many different ways so the reader can feel an understanding of the isolation that was experienced through these camps and through these characters eyes.
