These tests were designed by Simon, and their purpose was to scale a child’s intelligence at specific ages. By designing these tests, these tests showed how much age correlates with errors made. This sparked Piaget’s curiosity, for he wondered the process behind children’s learning, but he felt as though the tests were missing something. He realized that children use their imagination to make up for the experiences in life that they are missing. Piaget came up with the four stages of mental development. The mental development was called Schema. The four stages of Schema were sensorimotor stage, pre-operation stage, concrete operational stage and formal operations. The first stage, sensorimotor stage, children between the ages of birth to 2 years old are learning the relationships between their bodies and the environment. They are learning this by using their motor actions. The motor skills children use are looking, sucking, grasping, and listening to learn more about their surroundings. The second stage, pre-operation stage, children of the ages 3 to 7 years old, engross in symbolic play and learn how to use symbols. They use their natural instincts to develop intelligence.
