A female dressed in white represented nurses because white is a symbol of purity and cleanses. The crowd in the background could mean a holiday is being celebrated or a celebration of sailors returning from war that they had won. If it was a day of celebrating the sailor's return home, wouldn’t the be more than three sailors in the photo? I made an inference that the sailor and the female are strangers. The reason I said this is because the female has her had clenched in a fist, but maybe she's clenching her fist because people are watching the couple kiss and doesn't want to ruin the celebration. Another reason is the sailor is the only one embracing the female while they kiss while the female has her arm between the two as if she was trying to put some distance from each other. Throughout this essay I have repeatedly stated the sailor and the female because I'm not entirely sure if they are a couple or just strangers like I stated before.
I believe that the sailor and female kissing represents a selected few of people in America. Since we can't see their faces, we can't identify who they are meaning we can't put a name on them. Updike stated “Like America, Mickey has a lot of black blood… we see that blacks were drawn much like cartoon animals, with round button noses and great white eyes creating the double arch of the curious widow’s-peaked brows.(388) ” Mickey Mouse was drawn to represent the ethnicity of blacks in America with eyes, clothing, shoes and eras that makes Mickey have soul that represents what people see and think of black
