The Red Terror group was created in 1917 but Stalin used it more in his dictatorship. Another thing Stalin begin to use was massive propaganda in hope to get the population behind the Soviets. It was very successful certainly during the push for the five-year plan. There were several different types, from films to show and posters that were seen in all the big cities in Russia. The Soviet Union had control of the media and businesses, with all the power the Soviets had they used it with propaganda to get the Russia people to support its politics and system. The propaganda was used to justify that if everyone works and builds up the country than there will be a bright future (Essay 3). The transition into Stalin’s reign showed how he changed the Soviet Union into his country. Stalinism was the name of his policies that he created and ran during his rule. There was a Stalin culture that many Russians agreed with. He was pictured as a kind leader and had a grass root support. Women started to work beside men instead of being housemaids and got income. Countries tried enormous economic relief plans, along with political policy changes. Some countries considered radical policies that would cause wars in hope of economic relief. The real threat came when Hitler came to power in Germany and in 1938 he invaded Austria. Stalin decided to isolate it’s self from the growing tensions in Europe. As the tension escalated there was signs of who’s on the Allies side and who’s on Hitler’s side. Stalin was wanting to gain back lost land from the Tsarist era as they invaded Finland in 1939. And took over the major Finland town of Vyborg in 1940. At the same time Hitler invaded Poland, Sweden, and France and led to worldwide fear. Most countries did not like the aggressive imperialistic moves of Hitler, but it took them longer to answer back because of economic issues from the Great Depression. Hitler and top German generals started planning the invasion of Russia and once again it was not planned well. Russia has a natural defense that’s not made of weapons and men. It’s nature its self, the geography of Russia is extremely cold winters. Most of Russia is sub artic and it helped them against Napoleon in the early 1800’s. Hitler doubted the strength of the Soviet army and thought he could take over Russia before it got to cold.
