L.M. Montgomery Middle School is located in the Blithe county district. This district has been ranked at 92nd out of 182 districts in the state of Georgia, according to SchoolDigger.com. L.M. Montgomery is in the process of becoming a Title 1 school, as about 63% of the students in attendance receive free or reduced lunch. This school is also in the final stages of a renovation, which began during the second half of the previous school year. As a result, the students and teachers are enjoying a fresh environment and new technology in their classrooms. These classrooms have moveable desks that can be rearranged depending on the day’s goals. The material on the desktops is such that the students can use dry-erase markers to draw on them without leaving permanent marks, which could be used for instructional purposes. There is built-in storage space along the back wall that can be used for a student library or to display student work, as well as a poster board that can be used for the same purpose. The benefits of using student choice in this classroom will be twofold; it will give the students overseer ship of their learning and it will make the content more interesting for them. The fact that there are so many more boys than girls in this class means that grouping will have to be very strategic in this respect, as the girls often voice concern when they are the only girl in a given group. Although this may not always be avoidable, extra effort should be made to ensure the girls have a “buddy” in their group whenever possible. Although the special education teacher is technically responsible for the special education students in this classroom, additional and specialized resources should be considered and provided to coincide with the lessons and objectives. Additionally, grouping and activities should be set up in such a way that the special education students are able to have maximum involvement with the rest of the class instead of becoming a “group within a group”.
