Symbols help add an allegorical side to a novel by representing other things. One symbol in the book is the conch. The boy use the conch as a speaking device. When you have the conch you get to speak. The conch represents civilization because of how it tries to keep stability in the tribe. When the conch gets destroyed it represents the downfall of civilization and the uprising of savagery. Another symbol in the book is the signal fire. The signal fire represents a sense of hope and rescue. To Ralph, the only way they are going to get rescued is by keeping the signal fire going. This symbol is important in the story because it generates conflict and aggression. It also ties in with irony when in the end the signal fire doesn’t save them. The forest fire Jack set saves them. Piggy’s specs are another symbol in Lord of the Flies they represent stability in the tribe. They represent this because in the beginning all is well-then society starts breaking down and Jack smacks Piggy and breaks one of the lenses. Society then continues to break down further until Jack recedes from the tribe, steals Piggy’s glasses, and Roger kills
