VDH can provide critical information to healthcare providers, including a fact sheet for managing patients exposed to or contaminated with radiation (Appendix 16) and instructions for collecting and shipping specimens for laboratory testing by urine bioassay (Appendix 17a for distribution outside VDH, Appendix 17b for distribution within VDH). For clinical management and care of patients with significant radiation exposure or contamination (≥ 1000 times background), DRH may refer healthcare providers, through the LHD Director, to REAC/TS. REAC/TS provides 24-hour clinical consultation for the medical management and radiation monitoring of radiation victims. A REAC/TS algorithm for managing radiation victims is presented in Appendix 18. VDH can also provide information to responders about PPE (See Section 2.10).…
He was a physically fit guy in his twenties about to backpack across Asia and Europe for three months. Not only did he have to bring three months worth of heart pills with him, he worried they would be stolen or confiscated when crossing borders. A little more than one year after his LINQ was implanted, the EP brought Ben to the hospital for a radio frequency (RF) pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) procedure. Ben ended up spending two nights in the hospital after the procedure due to complications with his lungs; he was only able to take about thirty percent of a normal breath. Ben was then sent home, symptom free…… until week…
Deny the service in question b/c the medical records do not support Clarivein ablation as reasonable and necessary. Background: Reuse of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs)may help address the unmet need among patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: To examine Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) physicians’ opinions regarding CIED reuse, an online survey eliciting attitudes toward CIED reuse was sent to all 3,380 HRS physician members. Results: There were 429 responses (response rate 13%). A large majority of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that resterilization of devices for reimplantation in patients who cannot afford new devices may be safe (370, 87%) and, if proven to be safe, would be ethical (375, 88%).…

During my time at Lahey, I cared for patients suffering from a myriad of cardiac conditions. This included caring for patients recovering from the treatment of AV blocks, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, acute coronary artery syndrome, and post-surgical repair of the coronary arteries. In completing this preceptorship, I learned how to analyze EKG strips, perform tracheostomy care, initiate tube feedings, and perform dressing changes, etc.…

IVC Filters May Have Deadly Complications Inferior vena cava filters, or IVC filters, are implanted in individuals who cannot safely take blood thinners in order to prevent clots from traveling to the lungs. These filters are designed to catch any clots and allow them time to safely dissipate. The FDA has received many reports of complications from retrievable IVC filters. The filters have punctured organs, migrated to other parts of the body, and fractured. As a result, the FDA has issued guidelines indicating that the IVC filters should be removed from the body as soon as possible, as the risk for complications increases the longer the filter stays in the body.…
Reduce Heart Failure Readmissions and Improve Patient Outcomes through Transitional Care "Heart failure (HF) affects about five million people in the United States, with 550,000 new patients diagnosed each year” (Hines, Yu & Randall, 2010 ). "It 's the leading cause of hospitalization and healthcare costs in the United States and up to 25% of patients hospitalized with (HF) are readmitted within 30 days” (Feltner, et al, 2014). Heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition and patients usually have associated co-morbid conditions such as renal failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes. All of these factors make patients more vulnerable to poor transition home or to other care settings such as skilled nursing facilities.…

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that certain implantable cardiac devices of St. Jude Medical have vulnerabilities that let the hacker access a device. The devices, such as defibrillators and pacemakers are used to control heart functions and prevent heart attacks. The penetrable devices under FDA’s warning are the Merlin@home Transmitters made by St. Jude Medical, which are the part of the home monitor. Pacemakers and other implanted cardiac devices use a wireless RF signal to connect to the home monitor.…
