Luella Bates Washington Jones is an independent woman with some hard decisions in her life. Such as when she almost got her purse stolen from a young boy named Roger. Jones decided to be nice to the boy but teach him a lesson at the same time. She takes Roger to her house and makes him cleanup. Roger has a chance to escape while on his way to the bathroom. “ The door was open. He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run, run, run, run, run!” (Hughes 188) He decided to stay at her house which I believe changed his life for the better. In addition to these first examples at the way end of the story. Jones is going to let Roger go home but she gives him some money before he goes. All he wanted all along was some blue suede shoes. She trusted him enough to give him the money after all. Flowers the generous woman everyone loves. Vivian sent her daughter Bailey to Mrs. Flowers house to drop off her groceries. But Flowers wanted Vivian’s other daughter. Marguerite. She went to her house to bake some cookies. They ended up reading together. Marguerite couldn’t bare not to talk to Mrs. Flowers anymore, she had to speak. I mean Mrs. Flowers did throw her, her first lifeline. If you look at this other example, it seems that whenever Marguerite went back to someplace she loved and adored, she couldn’t leave. Just like in these few sentences “ When Maya was about ten years old, she returned to Stamps from a visit to St. Louis with her mother. She had become depressed and withdrawn.” (Angelou 26) Her deciding to go to Mrs, Flowers house was the best thing that could’ve turned out for her. Mrs. Flowers was definitely intelligent, beautiful, and a role model for all. She was loved by all which I think motivated her because it would turn out good on both ends.
