What is malignant mesothelioma?
It is a rare tumor of mesothelial cells and it mostly affects the pleura (the lining that shields the lungs). Most people diagnosed with mesothelioma are likely to have been exposed to asbestos; a soft grey mineral that does not burn and is used by electricians and building to prevent heat loss or fire.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is said to have an increasing incidence in most industrialized countries due to the preceding widespread exposure to asbestos accounting for up to 80% of cases. The latent period of the tumor between the exposure and development may go to up to 50 years.
