With the expansion there would be more room for railroads, supporting trade from east to west. Southerners had hoped for the end of slavery, shifting it westward. The Manifest Destiny gave the American people a lot of hope, but without the Manifest Destiny civil war would have still happened but it added more gas to the fire. Another trigger event that led to civil war was the failure of the compromise of 1850. The compromise of 1850 was unsustainable between the north and the south policy of slavery. Congress had intentions to make it sustainable, the Compromise of 1850 just delayed the alienation within the nation. When the Compromise was proposed it did not receive majority vote. It allowed slavery by popular sovereignty. It also made it easier for southerners to obtain fugitive slaves. With the Compromise of 1850 allowing the possibility of new slave states, it also place legal demands upon northerners to help in recapturing fugitive slaves. When the Mexican war was won it introduced a vast of new territories. With these new territories, came concerns. An army doctor brought him into Missouri where he would become his personal servant. Scott believed that he and his family were entitled their freedom because they had been moved into a territory where it was a free state, Illinois, and a free territory, Wisconsin. Even after returning to Missouri they would be free. This lead to the Dred Scott decision; the Supreme Court ruled that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and ruled against Dred Scott. Dredd Scott was not entitled to his freedom because he traveled with his master into Free states.
