This is because mariachi music does not belong to one special event, but it is played for a number of occasions, from simple ceremonies or celebrations like store openings to morbid gatherings such as funerals. There is a distinct sound that comes with mariachi music that it is almost instantly recognizable: the elegance of the violins, the captivating vibrations of the guitar, the bellowing sounds of the trumpet, and the infamous “Grito”, or shouting out, of the lead singer of the group. Mariachi has managed to spread across the border due to the “massive immigration of Mexicans to the United States, the power of the international recording and media industries, and the fluid travel of mariachi musicians back and forth” (Sheehy 4). It is not a question of whether or not mariachi music would have made it to America, but how long it would have taken without the sudden increase of immigration or the astounding improvements in technology. Today’s technology has become such a central part in our everyday lives, making sharing and exploring new music as fast and easy as tapping the phone screen. Immigration from Mexico into the United States has formed a number of mariachi music epicenters, spanning as from as Chicago. There are many cities here in California alone which have a significant Hispanic population, among them, Los Angeles. Los Angeles has “emerged as a major center of mariachi musical life” (4) due to its growing Hispanic population. Mariachi music is not just a form of music, but it is a way to embrace Mexican culture and show the world the pride we have for our country. Like all other music, there is an artist or group that has made a name for themselves in a genre. Together they worked in harmony to create some of the best ranchera music to ever be created. It would be difficult to imagine how Vicente Fernández and his music would have turned out if he did not use a mariachi band, but rather taken on a different approach like singing on his own with a guitar or singing with a classic band of a guitar, bass, and drums. As it was, when Vicente Fernández was trying to get signed by a record company, he performed with a mariachi band by his side. Although they did not choose to sign him at first, something about his performance must have left a lasting impression in their minds because when they had to suddenly find a replacement for one of their other artists, Vicente Fernández automatically came to mind (95). The rest after that was history. One can wonder though, would his voice and his lyrics still have gotten him the same amount of success or would he have not even made it at all if he had gone a different route.
