Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd Junior in 1952, established the cake cutting ceremony, Lieutenant General John A. LeJeune Birthday Message and the Commandant’s Birthday Message. In 1956 the Marine Corps Birthday Ceremony entered the Marine Corps Drill Manual. The first event came from the 13th Commandant LeJeune thus ordered in Marine Corps Order 47. In that order, his message would be read every November 10. Who could forget Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone who fought courageously in the Pacific campaign in World War II, or the Marines and sailor who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi and letting Japan know we will win this war.
