Upper Iowa University Moving Forward: Implementing Math Daily 3
Moving Forward: Implementing Math Daily 3 is the title of my reflection piece because I plan to fully implement this math format in my first grade classroom during math this coming fall. This class has been one of the most worthwhile classes I have had the opportunity to take during my career. The class’ format of logging into a discussion board, reading current research articles, viewing videos and lectures, and then creating lessons using the Math Daily 3 components were all helpful in guiding me into the implementation of this setup.

I have the good fortune of having my students far enough along at this time of the year that they have been exposed to a variety of games and skills. We can review games and even organize them together as a class and then post them on our board. Students being given choices and ownership fosters independence and accountability. According to the article, Choices for Children: Why and How to Let Students Decide (Kohn) empowering students positively affects their well-being, behavior and values, academic achievement, teachers, and understanding of democracy. I think back to beginning Daily 5 a few years ago and how well it worked. Choice is highly motivating and it is one of the cornerstones of Daily 5 (Boushey & Moser, …show more content…
-Socrates I am so excited about taking these first steps to changing the way I have been teaching math over the years. I found value in teaching Math Their Way many years ago guiding children while learning about numbers and concepts with mostly hands-on activities and then over the years moving to organized, published math series’. Math Daily 3 seems to be the answer to providing a system to arrange my math time, incorporating games to practice skills, working with peers, allowing for easy differentiation, but also writing to communicate about math. As it states in the new book, Math Daily 5 the 2nd edition, Math Daily 3 is not about providing specific math content. It is about providing tasks and activities that engage students in the mathematics they are expected to learn (Vande de Walle and Lovin
