In the 7th century, Muhammad, a religious man and merchant from the city, Mecca, founded the religion Islam. This monotheistic faith is based on the revelations that Muhammad supposedly received from the angel Gabriel that was given from Allah. Islam continued to rapidly expand and resulted with nearly the entire Arabian Peninsula under Muslim control. Coates starts off by writing about his time in Howard University which he refers to as the Mecca. Here he saw a variety of black people and spent much time reading books in its library. Reading about black history, finding answers to questions he asked in the past. Everyday Coates would learn new information stating “Things I believed merely a week earlier.. could be smashed to splinters by another,” showing how information was contradictory. At the Mecca, Coates later talks of the women he meets there and how they impacted him.…
While attending Howard University, Coates realized that “[His] Mecca was, and shall always be Howard University” (39). A Mecca is, “a place regarded as a center for a specified group, activity, or interest” (Webster). While growing up, Coates found it hard to feel part of something, and even into adulthood he never felt like he belonged in America, but he felt a part of something at Howard University. Coates explains that “the Meccas is a machine, crafted to capture and concentrate the dark energy of all African peoples and inject it directly into the student body” (40). The Mecca helped Coates feel as if was part of a larger community and was needed.…

Ibn Jubayr describes Damascus as one of the most spectacular, breathtaking cities and that even Arab desert dwelling nomads considered it a paradise. Ibn Jubayr’s viewpoint is also important because he is a traveler and geographer, making his opinion will be unbiased and objective. Religion in a country can have great meaning and power in cities across the global. A holy city can be seen as a symbolic city, representing attributes beyond its natural characteristics. Holy cities included many different types of church structures that would be almost as powerful as the castle itself. The church was typically one the largest visible building seen across the land. Churches in these cities were grand and elegant, and showed dominance in the town.…
Many people including Muslims themselves sometimes misunderstand the Holy Koran, because it has many implicit peaceful great messages. However, and as a Muslim person, I cannot deny that too many Muslims overwhelm in their religion and what the Koran says or teaches us. Koran didn’t say to kill or to harm anyone including ourselves; it doesn’t make sense that one religion is all about death, killing and blood, because this isn’t Emo’s or Gothic’s religion with no offense to them surely. On the other hand, Non-Muslims judge the Islam and the Koran based only on the Muslims who overwhelm in their religion and kill everyone who don’t believe in their religion forgetting that the Holy Koran says: “To you your religion and to me mine”, that is…
