The first practitioner I have decided to research an investigate is an adult mental health nurse within the health care sector. A general overview of an adult mental health nurse is to provide care and support for a patient regarding their emotional well being and physical needs. They help support a care plan that has been put in place for the patient alongside other practitioners, and correspond with family and friends if required to continue with support outside the clinical setting. An adult mental health nurse could be helping various patients at once with a range of mental illnesses. The most common is for a patient to arrange to see their GP if they have any concerns about their emotional well being, for example the patient could be feeling depressed. The GP may feel like it can be managed within the surgery with regular appointments, but it may be necessary to refer the patient onto other health care services. These could be services such as a psychologist, which could help improve emotional well being of the patient. Psychologists can offer various treatments such as counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (Health careers,no date a). Cognitive behavioural therapy is a highly effective treatment used to treat a range of mental health problems such as depression or obsessive compulsive disorder. It could involve other teams such as occupational health, and/or social workers who may be able to help with factors that could be contributing towards the issue, such as homelessness in an attempt to try improve physical life quality factors such as physical comfort.
