Meyerhold’s style of theatre introduced a new avant-garde approach to stage design, lighting, sound, and most importantly acting which has had a major impact in theatre now days. He was the first Russian director to go against realism in an extremely traditional and political time in Russia. Through this style of theatre the concept of biomechanics came to life which completely changed the idea of realistic acting. Biomechanics is a form of acting training meant to express an emotional experience through the movement of the body. Meyerhold trained actors to be aware of their body through deep focus on the movement, rhythm, and exaggerated reflex (Baldwin). It just did it in a way in which people at the time did not understand because it went against societal norms or the idea of realism. Theatre would not be fascinating if there was only one correct way to do things and Meyerhold as a director stood for his vision and creative ideas which pushed the envelope to accepting different styles of theatre. Theatre now days would not be as diverse, creative, and entertaining if it wasn’t for influencers like Meyerhold who were fearless and innovating at times when people were afraid of change. Our performance of A Doll’s House inspired by Meyerhold’s theatrical style showcased a performance filled with biomechanical acting techniques. One way in which the actors in our performance showcased biomechanics was through their exaggerated movements to emphasize the words, Nora’s hectic world, and the relationship between Nora and Torvald. The idea of biomechanics is to use the body as a way to showcase the character’s feelings so in our performance Maggie and Eliza used exaggerated movements in order to emphasize the emotions Nora and Torvald felt throughout their unstable relationship.
