Introduction:
Every ecological environment provides with distinct nutrients that allows certain microorganism to survive and grow. Sergei Winogradsky, a Russian microbiologist, developed the Winogradsky Column to grow and investigate microorganisms in a complex biofilm communities. This column will grow different microbes at different gradients that will appear on the column. Depending on the various concentrations of nutrients, choice of soil and water used, a variety of organism will appear over time in the column (Esteban et al., 2015). This lab was discovery science. The control and experimental column showed that the black spots were appearing more where the sun light did not hit it. The control column presented small amount of green spots where the sunlight was hitting the column. Meanwhile, the experimental presented less green bacteria. The black spots increased in both columns, but the experimental group had a greater area of black spots. Black spots were found at the bottom and where the sunlight did not reach the columns. The experimental column has a greater amount of bacteria that can reduce sulfur into hydrogen sulfide. Rundell et al. (2014) explained that “Deltaproteobacteria have been identified as an abundant member of black layer communities in wetlands”. As a result of high concentrations of sulfide, the column also presented large amount of green sulfur bacteria. In the experimental group, the column did not have purple sulfur bacteria.
