Laws and rules are in place worldwide to regulate society and to protect people. They are meant to either prevent or deter people’s behavior that may have negative consequences. Without such order, we would have anarchy. While all laws are rules, not all rules are laws. Rules generally apply to specific groups or at specific times; whereas laws apply all the time. Therefore, it goes without saying that yes, the university should have rules in place that protects students from possible dangerous situations and from being exploited for personal or professional gain. Its players are its commodity. And like any commodity in high demand, it can negotiate a mutually accepted agreement that guarantees certain compensatory outcomes. One of those outcomes is that in the event of injury, said player will continue to earn a predetermined amount of money. Whether or not this is right is very subjective. It isn’t illegal. Nor immoral. It’s not even unethical. Is it fair? Is life? If you don’t agree with the fact that athletes make the exorbitant amount of money they do or more specifically continue to receive a paycheck while injured, ask yourself how it is even possible. This occurs because everyday people participate in the vicarious façade of ‘belonging’ to a professional sports team. This participation amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars by way of advertising, clothing, ticket sales, etc. Don’t think people believe they don’t belong to their favorite franchise?
