ADP 6-0 (2012) defines the art of command as “the method by which commanders exert their authority originating from their rank and position”. As a command sergeant major, I see this as one of my major responsibilities because I am the pulse keeper for the organization and ensuring that information is conveyed appropriately to the commander. I will also assist the commander in conveying his message to the rest of the formation, especially to the company commanders. Those young commanders are vying for a top block on their evaluation reports and sometimes they have reservations about going to the see the commander, while they have no problem knowing on the sergeant major’s door for advice. This is a special relationship that I enjoyed at the company level as a first sergeant with the lieutenants. It creates a command climate where everyone is invested in creating the best command climate that exudes professional in every task, no matter how big or small. Utilizing the principles of mission command while applying the art of command and science of control requires an understanding of human nature and as well as a passion for promoting the profession. I whole-heartedly believe that I have both an understanding and the passion to be the best sergeant major that I can be and the drive to produce the best Soldiers America entrusts to my
