European society went through great changes during the last half of 19th Century and the beginning of 20th Century. Industry had a rapid development as the processes started to become more mechanical and machines increased their importance in manufacture processes. As the society entered to a new age known as “Modern”, the artistic approach to life also changed, introducing new artistic currents based on the Modernism. The current essay intends to provide a wider explanation of Modernism and the subsequent avant-gardes focusing on Cubism and why do I consider that it greatly represents the changes of the modern time. The explanation will include an analysis of “Cubist Manifesto” written by Guillaume Apollinaire, which …show more content…
German- speaking countries also developed great art about Modernisms, linking in a more subjective way the Modern to the German society`s concerns. The book mentions “expressionism and futurism are both evidently forms of response to the circumstances of urban modernity: negative and positive undoubtedly” ( Harrison, p.129, 1992) I think the previous statement is utterly true because I consider both movements correspond to a particular way of perceiving the modernization. Because of this, some kinds of Cubism were more pure than others.
For example scientific cubism was based on elements not from the visual reality but from the reality of knowledge. On the other hand, Orphic cubism was all about creating new compositions based on elements entirely created by the artist. Orphism relied on color and form to transmit meaning and Apollinaire considered this kind of Cubism as “Pure art”.
In conclusion, I consider that each time and change in human life, as the Mechanical revolution Europe experienced during the latest of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, led to changes in society. In my opinion art is a way in which this changes are internalized and preserved. Cubism was the internalization of the Modern process, as I said before it was Modernism by itself since it really became part of the transformations of that time. I really consider Cubist painters knew how to create and establish a new way of art, which represented the changes if the time they lived in. I found interesting writing this essay since it helped me to better understand Cubism, what it means and the social matters that contributed to its
