Everyone wants different things in life, some will go ahead and take an extra step to get what they want, only very ambitious people will go far for what they want. When Montresor was plotting his revenge one of the things he was thinking about was: “At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely settled.” Montresor’s ambition was enough for him to not give up on his complicated plans, and while a lot of people would’ve gave up on a plan like that, Montresor didn’t. He was so intent on getting his revenge against Fortunato, and sometimes people like that can go a little too far to achieve their goals, often bringing bad consequences for the people around them. When Fortunato insulted Montresor in his mind he was thinking: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best as I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.” Montresor was so angry at Fortunato’s insult that when he vowed revenge he carried it out with careful planning, careful enough to not get framed or caught. Reading from Montresor’s point of view you can tell that with his anger also came craziness and both of those factors can be extremely dangerous as well.
