They tried to get help but john became sloppy and really mean. 2 days before the attack, John took off his belt and tried to choke Barbara with it. The night of the murder John was sober when he came home. That 's when Mrs. Barrett told him that she didn’t like it when he came home late. John got extremely mad and said he wanted a divorce. Barbara was devastated and tried to convince him to change his mind. They continued to argue over dinner when he said he wanted to leave that night. Barbara decided to go pour herself another drink when john came in ready to beat her with his belt. Mrs. Barrett knew that he was going to try and kill her so she picked up the gun John had hidden in the couch and pointed it at him. Barrett should be allowed to claim Battered woman 's syndrome because she meets all the requirements. Her husband went in cycles and was remorseful after the attacks. Mrs. Barrett would like to have Leslie McGuire present this information because she feels that she is experienced and educated enough to help explain her theories that BWS is real and applies to his case. Leslie McGuire has advanced learning in sociological and psychological dysfunctioning within the family structure and wrote a book. She has 7 years of experience making her more than qualified to testify for Mrs. Barrett. She should also be allowed to claim self- defense because she never wanted to hurt John, but he would have hurt her
