Mumps
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus that passes from one person to another through saliva, nasal secretions, and dose contact. A person that is affected can spread the disease by sharing items like cups and eating utensils, touching objects/ surfaces without washing their hands, or coughing, and sneezing. The condition affects the salivary glands also called the Parotid glands. These glands are responsible for producing saliva. There are three sets of salivary glands on each side of the face which are located behind the ear. Mumps are best known for puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw. Most symptoms of mumps include: muscle aches, headache, fever, tiredness, and swollen or tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides. Mumps mostly affect the salivary glands but can cause inflammation in other areas of the body, such as the brain and the reproductive organs. For males, it can give them inflammation of the testicles which is known as Orchitis. For females, it can give them inflammation of the ovaries which is known as Oophoritis, it could be painful, but it doesn’t harm the woman’s eggs. But if she were to be pregnant then she could have a higher risk of experiencing a miscarriage. It can also lead to meningitis and could be fatal if not treated. Meningitis is the swelling of the membranes around your spinal cord and brain. Mumps also leads to hearing loss as well. Mumps can be prevented with an MMR vaccine. This vaccine can protect against three diseases: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Children get two doses of MMR starting at 12 to 15 months for the first dose. The second dose is at 4 to 6 years old. Adults and teens should be up to date with this
