They generate, interpret, and report test results vital in making a timely and accurate diagnosis. They must pay attention to detail and encompass problem solving skills. Laboratory technologists work as a part of medical and research teams. They analyze body fluids and other compounds and perform tests using specialized equipment to diagnose disease and monitor treatment.
The population of my discourse community includes everyone in the medical profession and healthcare system; however, it is not limited to only the healthcare system. Every field, job and profession overlaps with the healthcare system in some form or manner. Construction workers, veterinarians, lawyers, police men and women, teachers and many more discourse communities come to the hospital for a variety of reasons. Many companies require their workers to have labs taken for a new job; this is the job of the medical laboratory technician. Any of these discourse communities have the potential to be in a position where their blood will be drawn and examined. Those who are in car accidents or people who get sick and need blood transfusions will have their blood tested for certain characteristics. A medical lab technician will be able to determine the blood type, as well as, being able to tell if someone is sick or has cancer. The healthcare community overlaps with every other discourse community at some point in time. Every business and company uses the healthcare system and the healthcare system will always have patients to examine. The healthcare community communicates with insurance companies in respect to the insurance coverage they ultimately provide and communication is essential. The reason they communicate with insurance companies is they provide medical reports and billing, which include, patient details, which in return provide statistical evidence for government entities, and allow them to make coverage cost judgments. The statistical data provided by the healthcare profession provides the government and other business entities with vital healthcare information and enables them to make educated business decisions regarding the healthcare plans they will ultimately provide.
