The idea I had regarding family were simple. A family consists of a father, a mother, children and maybe pets. This was the type of family structure in which I grew up. Although, some family members were not accustomed to having both the father and mother in their homes, they were still part of a family.
Contemplating my childhood today, I did not comprehend the importance of family differences. I did not consider there could be more than one way to structure a family. This was partly due to what everyone said a family should be. As an adult, I clearly understand that there are many unique circumstances that constitute a family. The various conditions that surround kinfolk are precisely what makes us family. The memory of painful losses and joyous gains are intertwined in the fabric of family.
My childhood prepared me for my situation. My father was the head of our immediate family. However my mother was on the front lines, so to speak. She was always available for us.
