It is a true delight to see them grow throughout the year. In order to become an effective teacher, I believe that you must first become an effective student. Learning for me is a life-long process and is the foundation of my teaching philosophy. I believe that I must be knowledgeable and passionate about the content area in which I teach in order to bring out the best in my students. My future professional development will center on the idea of differentiated instruction. Differentiation creates equitable learning situations for all learners. Although I feel that I know a lot about this topic, by learning more about differentiated instruction it will become better integrated into the foundation of my classroom environment. They usually lack confidence due to their difficulties learning a new language, or fear of being in a new environment. They come to me with no voice, usually too shy or embarrassed to speak up. I feel that learning about a student’s culture is a vital first step to creating a classroom community of learners. Peregoy and Boyle (2008), assert that teachers must learn about their student’s culture in order to ensure the group’s unity and survival. By learning as much as I can about my students and incorporating my findings into my teaching, students are able to acclimate to the classroom where they quickly form into a cohesive unit. My classroom environment becomes their safe haven, in order to combat all of the barriers they bring with them to class. The goal is to create a student centered environment where the students take charge of their own learning. Most often I utilize the sheltered instruction model in my classroom. According to Diaz-Rico and Weed (2010), the goal of sheltered instruction is to provide support for the language learner while they are in the learning grade-appropriate content rather than allowing them to struggle in mainstream classes. Students are given the opportunity to read, write and listen prior to being given time to process their ideas before voicing them. Students are not judged for the content of their opinions but the quality of their thought process. My
