We as a sorority have so many rites and rituals that are all only available to those who are official members. It does not matter where in the world you are; if you are a member of my organization you get the same copy of the book. In that book there are lists of all the rites and rituals that you are to follow and how you are to follow them.
Another principle also laid out my Deal and Kennedy is the dedication to a shared vision and values. As a sorority, we have a mission statement that lists out the mission of us an organization. If one does not believe in that mission, they would not be apart out my organization. There are over 85,000 thousand people in my organization and although we have great leadership on the international, regional, and local levels, it is up to those members who are not a part leadership team to go out and do everything that we as a sorority say we value. For example, on an undergraduate level the way that that I do my part is by helping to raise money for out national partners like St. Jude Children’s hospital and the March of Dimes.
The final principle, created by Jim Collins and Porras, also that comes along with being a part of a sorority is the feeling of elitism. Most, if not everyone, in my organization, has a strong since of pride and that is why my sorority is so secretive. It feels good sharing a common bond with a select group of women who you can call you sister and you know you have share some of the same values with.
While, evaluating my organization I did learn three things. The first thing that I learned is that the way we operate is really similar to that of an actual business. I have been told throughout my time with the sorority, that we operate like a business, so that is what I then tell people.
