Some of the positive influences of nuclear power include the ability to produce clean energy, produces higher quantities of energy, low operating cost and it is in fact safer than coal. Nuclear energy produces electricity without greenhouse gas emissions. It produces electricity without pollution, unlike fossil fuels, which produce CO2 as it is the major cause of greenhouse gases in the earth’s ozone layer. Fundamentally, if uranium were to be mined and transported in an efficient manner, nuclear power would be “carbon-zero”.
Additional positive fundamentals of adopting nuclear energy are the fact that it produces higher quantities of energy and is far more efficient, the quantity of energy released from uranium per gram is much more than that of fossil fuels such as oil or coal. Nuclear power is approximately 8,000 times more efficient that the primary source of energy today. Despite there being a lesser quantity of uranium resources in the world compared to fossil fuel resources, the potential amount of energy produced is still greater to that to coal or …show more content…
The fuel that is used to generate nuclear power is highly radioactive and had to be cautiously stored for years after use. A practical solution for waste management are still undergoing research. A possible leakage of the radioactive material could lead to a deadly disaster, releasing radioactive substances containing radioisotopes with long half-lives meaning that these isotopes stay in the atmosphere in some form or the other. These radiations can have a lasting effect on human life. There are two ways in which radioactive material harms the human body, it either kills cells in your body directly or it can cause mutation to a person’s DNA, and these mutations could lead to cancer and even birth defects if not repaired. Another type of cancer caused by radioactive waste is thyroid cancer and radioactive iodine is usually absorbed the thyroid glands. This is particularly damaging for children since their thyroid glands are 10 times smaller than those of adults.
Additional negative fundamentals of adopting nuclear energy are major impacts on human life. Although there have been new technologies put in place to make sure that the Fukushima nuclear disaster won’t happen again, the chance of nuclear disaster is ever so conceivable. Even a slight radiation leakage could motivate devastating effects, especially on the workers of the power plants
