At this point in our society it seems that if an individual does not have a smartphone, they are considered abnormal or different from others just because of the device they have. This being said, cellular communication and smartphone use has dramatically increased over the years. “Aided by the convenience and constant access provided by mobile devices, especially smartphones, 92% of teens report going online daily — including 24% who say they go online almost constantly, according to a new study from Pew Research Center” (Lenhart). Clearly stated by this data, teenagers are succumbed by and addicted to their mobile device as they constantly feel the urge or desire to go online. The effect that social media has on teenagers is what truly makes them the focal point of this controversy. “71 percent of teens use more than one social media network site” (Lenhart) on their mobile device. There are many facts and elements that prove that cellular devices are extremely harmful to the human body. Researchers are continuing to prove it to the public to raise awareness to people all over the globe. Smartphones are proven to emit radiation that can have numerous detrimental effects on our health. “The radiation breaks DNA strands, disrupts cell functioning, weakens the brain’s protective barrier, and releases highly reactive and damaging free radicals” (Markov).
