The news media serves as an important political function in the United States. It serves as a primary source of information on political issues and candidates for many citizens. It also allows citizens to observe real events on the battlefield, watch tragedies unfold, and watch the president’s mannerisms when he speaks. The news media has been a major source of information for the public ever since the printing press, where it has since grown exponentially. This essay claims that the news media has a liberal bias because the liberal view is predominant in America.
Television is known to be the media’s most powerful medium for displaying content. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson used television in order to accomplish civil rights reform (Yolaf, 318). Past presidents have tried to push the same pieces of legislation to address civil rights yet have failed because they lacked public support. Johnson might have had the same fate as the other presidents if it weren’t for the unprecedented television coverage of African Americans (Yolaf, 320).

This strip showed the adventures and lives of many real life characters, including the president of the United states. Tredeau’s use of real characters has often been regarded as controversial and revealed as liberal by critics. He would often portray George W. Bush with a Stetson hat sitting atop a Roman military hat representing imperialism. Since the news media hasn’t evolved much from its original ideologies, critics suggest that modern media is liberal because many believe that major news corporations display their liberal side on networks.
