The protagonist, Gogol’s, deals with fierceness between his real name and his pet name. Why is it so important that Lahiri has written an entire book on names ? A name is a group of letters that are proper to a human being yet given by parents. A name is one of the principal means to distinguish a person from wild animals. When you are a teen and you learns that your father give you your name because of someone else, it might lead you to an identity crisis because you does not really know wether you are you, or wether you are the same as the person with you name. However, as one reads it become obvious that he will always be Gogol he could change his name a thousand times he will remain the same inside and it appears that as long as he tires to be someone else that himself, Gogol will never be happy because Gogol is his fate.
