The counselor must use direct techniques with nouthetic authority. Adams reiterates that nouthetic authority consists of confronting the counselee with the deepest love, in place of judgement. It should focus on the counselee’s personal responsibility, the counselee’s admission of guilt, and confession of sin while the seeking of forgiveness in Christ Jesus.
Nouthetic counselors are held to high standards of biblical living. True nouthetic counselors must have certain qualities to counsel beginning with Godly wisdom and goodness to qualify them to counsel through the Holy Spirit and Holy Scriptures. A counselor must have understanding, knowledge and truth of Scriptures and practice; live by them. A positive attitude and a genuine desire to help another person is equally necessary.
