The paintings in the exhibition widely ranged from Still-Life Painting to the Dutch Golden Age Painting and both of these genres shares unique characteristics with the audience. One of the greatest characteristics of Still Life Painting is that all the objects have been exclusively depicted in details. The use of colors, arrangement of the objects in Still-Life Painting truly recorded and reflected the objects at that specific moment which made this exhibition more lively and attractive. Most of the paintings in the exhibition are Oil Paintings which has firstly created a smooth and realistic feelings and impressions to the audience. Oil Painting is a kind of medium with great flexibility and adaptability in painting. It can be used to create different lines and shapes, and it also has an outstanding effect in terms of showing the color intensity with strong color variations. Oil painting allows artists to create the sense of opaque, translucence or transparent on the same painting by adding various and complex layers on the objects. It can also help to create the textural difference by using contrast, different intensity of colors with the use of different tools like brushes and painting knifes. Take one of the paintings “A Merry Party” (Fig.5) as an example. This painting depicted a party scene of an ordinary family. In the painting, although there isn’t much emphasis on shadow and light, the facial expressions of each person, the creases and colors of the clothes, actions of different people in the party can be clearly seen which you can feel that you were right there next to the occasion. Another medium being use in the exhibition is Tempera. Tempera is an art medium with longer history than Oil Painting.
