An opioid is a kind of analgesic medicine that relieves moderate to severe pain. It is very prevalent due to its effectiveness, and it has been used to manage acute to a chronic type of pain. However, treating chronic pain with this drug is a challenged due to the subjective characteristics and multifactorial nature of this condition.
Chou et al. (2015, p. 276) define long-term opioid therapy as a treatment for more than three months; it is complex and requires one on one risk-benefit evaluation. After probing into related research, I found that it truly has more disadvantages versus advantages.
