I learned that there are different movements in pieces. For the first half of the concert I kept thinking the piece was over and was wondering why the conductor wasn’t stepping away and why no one was clapping. It turns out that the orchestra was actually just transitioning into the next movement of the piece.
The first piece, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concert, mvt 3 had two separate movements. This piece was my favorite one of the night. The sounds changed so much and the emotion that they brought with them changed as well. The music reminded me of a movie score featuring pirates and sailing ships, but then as movements changed I pictured The Hobbit. In the second movement of the first piece the woodwind instruments began to pluck their strings, and it gave me really happy thoughts.
