Etiology OFC occurs as a result of untreated hyperparathyroidism. Four parathyroid glands that are located in the neck are responsible for producing the parathyroid hormone that helps regulate the levels of calcium, phosphorous, and vitamin D throughout the body. Abundant amounts of the parathyroid hormone will cause osteoclasts to become hyperactive and weaken the bone by breaking it down to allow calcium to leave the bone and fuse into the bloodstream. Blood tests may also show that parathyroid hormone levels surpass the normal amounts that vary from 10 to 55 pg/mL. X-rays may show delicate thinning teeth, brown tumors, or depictions of any bones that show signs of complete or partial fractures, which can be most easily detected in the fingers since they are more often than not the first areas to show OFC symptoms.
