From 1871 to 1890 was the reign of Bismarck as the chancellor of Germany. With the new chancellor came a new style of Diplomacy. Bismarck Diplomacy could be described as a chess game he was playing between all of the other great powers of Europe. Although the goal of the game was not to win all of the pieces. This era can be broken down into three essential components relevant to Bismarck’s reign, His initial goals and purposes of his actions, the implementation of his diplomacy, and the long or short term effects of his diplomatic actions.

The french were distraught and angry over the lost of one of their great industrial and military producers, Alsace-Lorraine. Bismarck knew about this and knew that the only way to avoid having a war on two fronts was by having a good diplomatic relationship with russia. Bismarck did this by attempting to create alliances with the other powers but he always excluded france. This effort to create peaceful relations with other nations was to establish germany as the “honest broker” of europe. Germany again wanted to be considered a power but not too much of an annoyance to other powers that it became targeted.
How did Bismarck implement his policy? Well he began with his alliance system, specifically the First Dreikaiserbund, this was an “untrue” alliance
