By looking at “ Beloved” by Toni Morrison, we can see firsthand how slavery has taken a toll on Sethe, Denver, and Paul D. Set during Reconstruction in Cincinnati in 1871, this family is constantly haunted by their past hardships as slaves. All their pain eventually manifests into someone or something called Beloved. One could say that since Beloved and Paul D where able to come to terms with their past, and focus on the future that Beloved was able to finally be at peace and move on. In a ways one could argue that Beloved could have been Sethe's child that perished long ago, and came back looking for that motherly love it desperately needs. Once they finally confronted it, and acknowledged it, it was only then that it was finally able to move on just like Sethe and Paul D were finally able to do
