James Parkinson, the first child of Mary and John Parkinson, was born at 1 Hoxton Square, Shoreditch, London, on April 11, 1775. His father, John, was a member of the Anatomical Warden of the Surgeon’s Company and worked as an apothecary and a surgeon in their city (Pearce, 1989). Influenced by his father, James gained an interest in the field of medicine and pursued it later in his life. On May 12, 1781, he married Mary Dale in St. Leonard’s Church and had six (6) children (Morris, 2003).
