The SPN was developed in the late 1980’s by Dr. Cecily Betz. A group of pediatric nurses, educators, and researchers attended a conference lead by Dr. Betz and it was soon decided that the specialty needed an organization of its own. As more and more awareness of this field has spread, there are over 2,500 members in the SPN. According to the SPN (2012), the vision is, “to be the premier resource for nurses caring for children and families.” They achieve this vision through their core values of commitment, integrity, leadership, and excellence.
