After many hours of travelling, my family and I finally arrived in the Dominican Republic; our luxurious home for the next seven days. It was much hotter than I expected. The enormous cascade of navy blue stretched out in the darkness forever. Delicate waves crashed against the shore one after the other in a beautiful melody. I approached the landscape, trying to take in the wondrous view before me. The sand was white and soft as the finest silk. The moonlight shined over the waves and glittered off of the water like a thousand diamonds. “It’s much bigger than the pictures, isn’t it?” My uncle asked. I couldn’t answer right away. Before I got into the water, I watched the rumbling waves chase small children back onto the shore as they squealed with glee. Seagulls cried overhead and swept down to the sand to scour the beach for their next meal. Although I was overwhelmingly excited to get the opportunity to float in the ocean, there was a small secret that I forgot to mention to my family. I am slightly afraid of the ocean. I’ve always had a fear of ocean creatures, a fear of the unexplored abyss. The sea is so immense that I’m frightened of what could be residing in it. Overcoming my fears, I stepped into the cool, crystal sea. The water engulfed my feet and made me shiver; it was so much colder than the air around us. My cousin urged me onward, so we stepped farther and farther out into the sea. Now up to my shoulders in the cold water, I felt an overwhelming sense of euphoria.
