Tungsten is considered a strategic mineral because it is used in many ways. Tungsten has a high heat resistance; therefore, it has applications in things such as filaments in light bulbs, heating elements of heaters and furnaces, and if combined to make an alloy, it can be used in aircraft engines. It also is used often in artistic ways, like in pottery, particularly for a yellow tint, and can be substituted for gold and platinum in jewelry, wedding bands for example, because it is hypoallergenic and has a hardness of 7.5-8, so it is scratch-resistant.
