In 1921, physical therapy started its first association; it started off as a small professional association that would only allow female therapists called American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association. A year later they changed their name to the American Physiotherapy Association and started allowing male therapists. Physical therapists were in need at the time, but with World War II and the polio epidemic at the world's fingertips, physical therapists were at a much higher demand. There will always be people with injuries that need rehabilitation. The career of Physical Therapy is not limited by borders. The biggest form of globalization in physical therapy is the international volunteer opportunities. Physical therapist are willing to travel to different countries and treat patients pro bono. Pro bono means that the therapist perform their services free of charge. The American Physical Therapist Association provides therapist easy access to a wide range of organizations that send therapist overseas (Gardner). Before therapist pick an organization to volunteer with, they must consider what services they are wanting to grant, the requirements to volunteer, housing availability, overall coat, and ability to communicate efficiently. The volunteer organizations educate the therapist on the country they are traveling to and people they will be providing service to. During the Haitian Relief Effort in 2010, Physical Therapist helped the native people during their crisis to provide funding and deliver medical supplies. Physical Therapist also partner with the Guatemala Wheelchair Clinic. Wheelchairs are hard to come by there, so the clinic provides one for the people who need one due to their disability. The Physical Therapist assist the clinic by helping fit the patients for their wheelchairs to ensure that they are safe and comfortable for the patient. They
