Compare the cognitive theories of Piaget and Vygotsky, and discuss their respective applicability in providing developmentally appropriate experiences in early childhood.
There are two great philosophers that are well known for their different methods and approaches of teaching. There names are Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. Both philosophers have contributed a great deal of their knowledge to the field of education. By offering explanations for children and their cognitive learning styles and also their abilities as they grow and develop from infancy to adults we now know that Piaget and Vygotsky both offer an explanation to children’s cognitive learning abilities and styles. Vygotsky, expressed a different point of view on cognitive development from Piaget. Vygotsky sociocultural theory of development became a major influence in the field of psychology. This new theory stated that all students learn through social interactions and their culture; which its much different than Piagets theory. Vygotsky theory states that children learn through social interactions and our cultures. It was stated by Vygotsky, “He believed that effective instruction occurs within the zone lying just beyond the skills already mastered by the child. When applied to young children with disabilities, Vygotsky approach clearly focuses on the need to understand each child’s development” (Dunlap 61). Vygotsky can honestly agree that not all children learn or develop in the same manner. It is important for all educators to stop and think for a second whether or not their children are learning or does the lesson require you to take a step
