When you use someone else’s words, thoughts, or ideas as your own, while writing a paper, that is called plagiarism. This can even include their pictures. At any point in the paper, if you did not give the original creator the proper credit for their originality and work, you have initially stolen from them. This work can come from the internet, book, newspaper, magazines, essays, or even work from files or electronic files. The faculty member will perform an investigation of the plagiarized paper in question. Once they make a decision they will speak with the student and if the student agrees they will proceed forward. If the student disagrees then they move to the next chain of command, etc… Depending on the degree of the plagiarism, Graduate level or Undergraduate level, decisions are made and conversations are had. For a student who is in graduate school the punishment is usually much more severe if the plagiarism was flagrant and intentional. Meaning the student knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to hand in a plagiarized paper for a grade. However if the student made an error in judgment and was not aware of citation errors or mistakes in references, then the punishments may not be as harsh as expulsion, it may be a paper on plagiarism and tutoring on how to properly cite …show more content…
My mother is a counselor and has been for seven years. Since I have been in the Lamar classes for counseling I have had my moms books and files from her classes. Each time I start a new class I pull up all of her files and her books and review them to get a sense of what the class is about and what I can expect. Sometimes I pull from hers to get ideas and build from them when I am stuck. Since I have been home this summer from school I have been working on my home computer and not my computer in my classroom, which has been difficult to switch to. I worked very hard on the week one assignment and when I saw a zero on the assignment, I automatically knew there was something wrong, so I checked every email I had. When I read my email I knew exactly what happened. I had submitted the wrong file. When I checked, I was right. I submitted the wrong one. I submitted the one that was using for reference and building from. Although I did do my own, I do understand why it was considered plagiarism. It was an oversight by myself. As an adult I made a mistake and I have to pay for that mistake. I have to work very hard the rest of these 4 weeks to make an A. I have to push to make up for those 50 points I lost. I am on academic probation for last semester due to my falling behind after my son was hospitalized.
