The development of policing can be traced back to earlier times in Europe when the concept was based on night watchman. It has since developed into what we know today as our local, state, and federal law enforcements agencies. There are several issues and challenges that law enforcement officers face today and must overcome. In this paper I will discuss the development of policing, the challenges of law enforcement, and what is required by officers in today’s society.
The development of policing began at time when Europe had come up with the concept of having night watchmen to watch over the communities. “Eventually, the need to confront the increase in crime resulted in cities forming reactive patrol units” (Gaines & Miller, 2008, p. 101). Some of the requirements are as follows: a U.S. citizen, never been convicted of a felony and be at least twenty-one years old. The person would also need to undergo several tests such a background and interviews with family and friends. At this time, a person would then go onto an academy for training in several areas of law enforcement and police work. Once the person has completed the proper training they would then go on to field training where they are assigned to a police officer and would work the streets. Because of the extensive qualifications and training, this can sometimes help to get the most qualified people into law enforcement. Some of the responsibilities of the police officers are to enforce all laws, prevent crime, and help to preserve the peace. Police officers are supposed to help our communities and the fight against crime as well as uphold the law
