The north side is composed of a landscape of mountains, with forests and valleys. The south side of the Tagus River is mainly composed of plains, vineyards and olive trees. Portugal has two archipelagos, Madeira and Azores; also the country has an exclusive economic zone of sea about 1,800,000 km2, making Portugal the 11th largest exclusive economic zone in the world.
An important ancient volcano is the Serra de Estrela, which measures around 6,500 ft. and it is a main attraction for winter sports to take place. Portugal’s highest point is the Pico Alto, measuring around 8,000 ft. and it a symbol of the country, located in Azores. (Physical Geography, N/A) The climate in Portugal is considered Mediterranean and it is one of the warmest countries in Europe; composed of white sanded beaches, volcanic lakes, deep valleys, snowy mountains, plains, forests and also deserts, making Portugal have diverse climates. Because Portugal has a long history and has been habituated for centuries, there is not a lot of vegetation left, although there are a couple of protected areas in the country. The rest of Portugal’s boundaries is ocean. The only country that borders Portugal is Spain. Portugal had lots of colonies in the Conquistadors Era, but they all got their independence. Most of the colonies were in Africa, Asia or South America, some of these, which were Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, India and Timor. Because Spain is so close to Portugal, they influence each other a lot. Therefore, we can say that the country that Portugal influences the most and is the most influenced by is Spain. Also because it is on the European Union it has to follow the regulations decided by the European Parliament; which at this moment, considering the country’s crisis and all the help it is receiving from the European Union, are a lot of these requirements and rules.
